As Daniel has already posted on Sri Lanka , I thought I’d give you my account of this beautiful place and tell you a little about my favourite sights. Sri Lanka itself is a holiday destination with many different contrasts, after experiencing an escorted tour here, I can say there are many places to see and things to do other than having a week on the beach. So if you’re looking for something a little different, then visit Sri Lanka today!

One of my most remembered trips was to the Udawalawe Elephant Orphanage. This is a must for all animal lovers! It was established by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in 1995 for orphaned elephants and to protect the endangered species of elephants that currently reside in Sri Lanka . If you’ve ever seen Born Free, well this department teamed up with the Born Free foundation to create this wonderful park. It was fantastic to see the elephants grazing at the centre but still in a natural environment.

Another memorable visit was to the famous Sigiriya Rock, an ancient palace that was thought to be selected by King Kasyapa for his new capital in 477-495 (according to the ancient chronicle Culavamsa). He built his palace on top of this rock and created an image of a Lion in the rockface which made the gateway for his temple. On arriving at Sigiriya Rock, we set on an afternoon climb to the top! The climb was well worth the effort as the views are amazing.

The island is home to famous temples, tea plantations, golden sandy beaches and national parks. Sri Lanka ‘s national parks are famous for elephants, leopards, sambhur and wild buffalo and jeep safari’s are available.
